Man who attacked nurses, then died in police custody, is IDed

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner has identified the man who died early Sunday morning in police custody after attacking several nurses at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood as Charles Emmett Logan, 68, of St. Paul.

The cause and manner of his death is still undetermined, according to a news release from the Department of Public Safety.

Logan had been hospitalized at St. John’s Hospital since Wednesday, suffering from bouts of confusion, according to authorities.

Early Sunday morning he used a metal pole to attack four nurses, "chasing them down the hallway" and striking them with the pole before fleeing the hospital. The pole is the type used to connect a medical device to a hospital bed.

One nurse suffered a collapsed lung, another had a broken wrist, and two others had less severe injuries.

Police found Logan three blocks north of the hospital. He was still holding the metal pole and ignored repeated orders from police to put it down. An officer then attempted to subdue him with a Taser, but it was not effective, according to the news release.

At that point, two officers restrained Logan on the ground and placed him in handcuffs. Logan became unresponsive a short time later. The officers attempted CPR at the scene and transported him back to St. John’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Another patient in the hospital, Adam Linn, told FOX 9 that he was awakened around 2 a.m. by screams, and when he walked into the hallway, he saw the attack.

“There was blood everywhere. Outside my reach were nurses laying in the hallway and a guy beating them with a medical device," Linn told the station.

He said he started chasing Logan, who then ran out of the building wearing just a hospital gown.

It's unclear what prompted the attack, but family members told Maplewood police that Logan’s behavior was uncharacteristic, according to the Star Tribune.

FOX 9 quoted a police report that said there was a disagreement among Logan's family members, and that the nurse supervisor called Maplewood police Saturday night because of "significant family dynamics" involving Logan. Family members declined to comment when contacted by the Star Tribune.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the circumstances surrounding Logan’s death at the request of the Maplewood Police Department and Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office. The BCA will present its findings to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office.

A Maplewood police officer and two Ramsey County deputies have been put on administrative leave until the investigation is complete, which is standard policy.
