Daniel Allen Bettcher, 59, was in the Otter Tail County jail on Tuesday night after he was caught driving a car in New York Mills, a violation of his probation. It is believed Bettcher holds the record in Minnesota for his 27 DWIs.

Danny Bettcher, 59, is well known in a pocket of central Minnesota as the man who has racked up 27 drunk driving offenses, believed to be the most in the state, the Fargo Forum reports. On Friday, he's being released after more than three years in prison, but for some he remains a symbol of the state's inability to prevent repeat drunken drivers from climbing behind the wheel.

Gophers' Mbakwe won't go to jail

Minnesota Gophers forward Trevor Mbakwe was in Florida on Friday for a court hearing as a judge mulled whether a probation violation merited jail time. But the judge ultimately decided that he would offer the NCAA player a lighter sentence: two years probation, 20 hours of community service per month and he must attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, the Star Tribune reports. He was arrested for DWI in July in Minnetonka, and he had been on probation stemming from a Florida battery charge in 2009.
