A new map shows the most popular cuisines by state, and in Minnesota that cuisine isn't really a type of cuisine at all.
The Huffington Post teamed up with Yelp, website with restaurant and business listings and reviews, to see what types of cuisine are most likely to appear in each state compared to the national average.
In Minnesota, buffets appear on Yelp's restaurant listings 53 percent more often than the national average.
The other cuisines that are disproportionately popular in Minnesota compared to the rest of the country:
- Traditional American – 35 percent higher than the national average.
- Pizza – 31 percent higher than national average.
- New American – 21 percent higher than the national average.
- Gluten-free – 18 percent higher than the national average.
Buffets are also the most popular cuisine in Iowa, appearing on Yelp's listings 127 percent more often than the national average.
To get this, Yelp calculated the percentage of total restaurants each cuisine represented in each state, then compared it to the cuisine's representation in restaurants nationally.
A map earlier this year analyzed state's most distinctive menu item. For Minnesota, it's walleye.
