An emotional victory for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School boys' hockey team has seen them named Florida state champions, and booked them on a flight to Minnesota.

Just 11 days after 16 students and one staff member died at the school in Parkland, Florida, their hockey team won a spot in the USA Hockey High School National Tournament in Minnesota next month.

According to the Miami Herald, the boys' team entered the four-team state tournament as the bottom seed only to win it.

“I love the way our team came together,” senior player Matthew Horowitz told WINK. "It’s been a rough week for all of us and hockey for us is more of a stress reliever, so we come out on the ice and are able to relieve everything.

“We’re pretty much fighting for the 17 who passed away."

One of those killed in the mass shooting was the sister of a player on the junior varsity team, the Miami Herald says.

The national tournament will be held at Plymouth Ice Center (PIC) March 22-26. The PIC had $2.2 million worth of upgrades completed in November in advance of of the tournament.
