Religious involvement in the debate over the marriage amendment may be stronger in Minnesota than it's been in any of the 30 states that have voted on a definition of marriage. The state's largest denomination, the Catholic church, supports the amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and a number of Jewish synagogues oppose it.

St. Paul Lutherans to oppose marriage amendment

St. Paul-area Lutherans are expected to go on record this weekend against the proposed marriage amendment to the state Constitution that would define marriage as a union between a man and woman. Nearly 600 Lutherans, representing about 115 congregations in the St. Paul Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, are scheduled to vote Saturday in Burnsville.

Marriage amendment foes raise $3.1 million

Minnesotans United for All Families, a group formed solely to defeat the proposed change to the state's constitution, has collected more than $4.6 million since the campaign started last year.

Agency: Anti-marriage amendment donor can remain anonymous

The state campaign finance board ruled Friday that a man who contributed $600 to a group opposing the Minnesota marriage amendment can remain anonymous. The man feared he would be fired from his Catholic employer if word of his contribution became public since the Catholic Church is in favor of the amendment, which would effectively ban same-sex marriages.

Former Minnesota Catholic priests urge 'no' vote on marriage amendment

Flying in the face of the beliefs of the archdiocese, a small group representing more than 80 former Catholic priests from throughout Minnesota gathered Thursday to encourage a "no" on a proposed state amendment that would legally define marriage between a man and a woman. The group said the anti-gay marriage measure would violate the principles of justice and love.
