The two health care providers began reviewing the potential merger about five months ago. A Fairview Red Wing official told the Republican Eagle that a final decision is expected to be made in the next several months. Lake City and Cannon Falls are already part of the Mayo Clinic Health System.

Mayo Clinic wins major patent victory

The Supreme Court sided unanimously with Mayo in a patent dispute with California-based Prometheus Laboratories. The clinic had used a blood test developed by Prometheus until 2004, when it developed its own in-house test. Prometheus sued for patent infringement, but Mayo argued that using test to measure a natural bodily process is not patent eligible.

The chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. says the Illinois Congressman is back in Washington after receiving treatment for depression at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The son of civil rights activist Jesse Jackson went on secret medical leave in June, and began treatment for bipolar disorder at the Mayo after being transferred from the Sierra Tucson Treatment Center in Arizona.
