Mayo ranked No. 3 best hospital in nation


U.S. News and World Report in its 24th annual rankings of hospitals says that the world-renown Rochester-based Mayo Clinic is the third best hospital in the nation, behind No. 1 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and No. 2 Massachusetts General in Boston. Here's the ranking.

Mayo was No. 3 last year, too.

The magazine ranks nearly 5,000 U.S. medical centers in 16 medical specialties, from cancer to geriatrics. Mayo is ranked in the top five in all but two categories (ophthalmology and psychiatry).

The magazine ranks the best hospitals in the Twin Cities:

1. Allina Abbot Northwestern
2. University of Minnesota Medical Center
3. Allina Mercy Hospital
4. St. John's Hospital
5. United Hospital St. Paul
6. Allina Unity Hospital
7. Fairview Southdale Hospital
8. North Memorial Hospital
9. Regions Hospital (tie)
9. St. Joseph's Hosptial (tie)

The report also ranks Twin Cities hospitals by specialty and by children's hospitals.

Rochester-based Mayo Clinic earned the No. 3 spot on U.S. News & World Report's elite list of “Best Hospitals."
