A groundbreaking advertising pitch by McDonald's to the Hmong community in St. Paul is apparently sending mixed messages. The Pioneer Press says the wording on a new billboard is supposed to roughly translate into, "Coffee gets you up, breakfast gets you going," but some Hmong speakers are saying the pitch doesn't make sense.

McDonald's apologizes for mistranslated billboards

The fast-food restaurant plans to correct a pair of billboards in St. Paul written in the Hmong language next week. The McDonald breakfast signs read, "Yuavtxhawbpabraukojsawv yuavntxivzograukoj mus," which loosely translates to say, "Coffee gets you up, breakfast gets you going." However, members of the Hmong community tell the Pioneer Press the text "doesn't make sense" and "there should definitely be spaces in between those words."

Stabbings, melee mar St. Paul Hmong event

Two men were stabbed at the Hmong Freedom Celebration and Sports Festival in St. Paul over the weekend, and another was robbed and stabbed as he left the event, police said. On Saturday, a fight involving 35 to 40 people broke out in which people threw chairs and hit each other with pipes, sticks and umbrellas. The 32nd annual event drew hundreds of athletes and as many as 30,000 spectators.
