Medtronic has notified more than 2,700 patients and the federal government about a potential privacy breach. The Pioneer Press reports that it involves a missing box of training records that contain health information that is protected by federal law. A spokeswoman said it's possible that some records included Social Security numbers.

The company sent letters to patients in early July about the situation and also arranged for them to receive identity protection services. A spokeswoman said there are no reports of misuse of the data, which the Fridley-based medical device company said did not contain sensitive information.

Companies are required to report breaches of unsecured protected health information that affect more than 500 people.
