A Burnsville man died at a Menards store in the Twin Cities on Friday in what has been described as a "forklift mishap."

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed Tuesday that 27-year-old Alec Saunders died after the incident at the Menards store at 2700 E. Hwy. 13, also in Burnsville.

Burnsville police told GoMN a forklift rolled on top of Saunders while he was in the outdoor lumber area on Friday morning.

When police arrived, Saunders had already been pulled out from under the vehicle and was being treated by fire department medics, but he died from blunt force chest injuries just before 9 a.m. in Hennepin County Medical Center.

The incident is being investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Statistics from OSHA show 41 workplace deaths involving forklifts in 2016 alone.

Most involve an employee being hit by or falling from a forklift.

GoMN has contacted Menards for more information. This story will be updated when they respond.
