Met Council considers Northstar Commuter Rail fare reduction

Prices would drop by a dollar at most stations, except Fridley, where it would decrease by 25 cents. Council spokesman Bruce Howard told Minnesota Public Radio, "we believe there's a good number of people that we could attract to the system by putting Northstar on sale." The Metropolitan Council Transportation Committee will consider the proposal, the first price change in two-and-a-half years, on Monday.

Northstar cuts fares by as much as 25 percent

Carrying fewer passengers this year, Northstar commuter rail is slashing fares by as much as 25 percent in an attempt to attract new riders. The price reduction underscores the ongoing challenge the three-year-old line faces in persuading northwest suburban commuters to get on board.

New Northstar station ready to roll

Roughly 100 new daily round-trip riders are expected to use the Northstar Commuter Line when rail service at the new $13 million Ramsey Station starts next Wednesday, Nov. 14, the Star Tribune reports. However, some officials are concerned construction was too costly and it will only take riders from neighboring Elk River and Anoka stations. The newspaper notes the Ramsey Star Express bus line is being discontinued.
