MetaCon 2012 runs through Sunday in Twin Cities

Organizers of the three-day event, that wraps up on Sunday, are expecting more than two thousand pop culture fans to spend part of their Labor Day weekend at Minnesota's first annual comic and sci-fi convention in Bloomington. Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role on all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and several Power Ranger stars are among the featured guests to attend the event.

Organizers of the three-day MetaCon event, which wraps up Sunday, are expecting more than 2,000 pop culture fans to spend part of their Labor Day weekend at Minnesota's first annual comic and sci-fi convention in Bloomington, Examiner.com reports.

Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role on all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and several Power Ranger stars are among the featured guests to attend the Minnesota event.

MetaCon organizers are already planning a bigger convention next year at a hotel in Minneapolis.

State DWI crackdown kicks off Friday, runs through Labor Day

State officials aren't waiting until Labor Day weekend to encourage people to plan for a sober ride if they are drinking. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety said it will kick off its "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign Friday, which will run through Labor Day. The department said Thursday that 68 percent of fatal accidents last year involved drivers who had blood alcohol levels of at least .16 -- twice the legal limit for driving.

City projects are victims of Dayton's tax bill veto

Gov. Mark Dayton's veto this week of an end-of-session tax bill caused some big headaches for several Minnesota cities, including Oakdale, Woodbury and Bloomington. The bill included tax provisions linked to a dozen local development projects, which city officials are now scrambling to save.

Cost Plus World Market returns to Twin Cities metro Sept. 13

The California-based retail chain will reopen two of its original six Twin Cities locations -- Bloomington and Roseville -- on Sept. 13, according to a news release. Cost Plus World Market, known for its foods and wines from around the world, announced it was returning to to the metro last month.
