Metro State University officials are asking faculty and staff at its Twin Cities campuses to review recent paystubs to see if they were shortchanged. Some employees did not get step increases or pay raises guaranteed on July 1 while others received inadequate summer pay.
The Pioneer Press reports the payroll problems are prompting a call for outside oversight, with University President Sue Hammersmith requesting an independent auditor.
Metro State's interfaculty organization asked instructors to review their paychecks for six months. Salaries were being circulated in spreadsheets to deans and faculty leaders.
Turnover in the school's human resources division contributed to the problems. An administration memo to faculty said the university has new data-entry staff and will update its paper-based payroll system with an online system.
Metro State employs 170 full-time and 689 part-time faculty and hundreds of additional staff at campuses in St. Paul, Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park. The university is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and University system. Last month, the system revealed that its rainy day fund is approaching $100 million. MnSCU’s reserve grew from $38 million in fiscal year 2003 to $99 million last year.
