The president of Metropolitan State University announced Wednesday that she's retiring next year.

The Pioneer Press reports Sue Hammersmith, 65, will finish out her contract which expires next June before an interim president is appointed for the 2014-2015 academic year.

The news comes just a few weeks Chancellor Steven Rosenstone, head of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, called for a formal payroll audit at the university prompted by an error that significantly underpaid faculty members.

Some summer instructors received paychecks for as little as $8 instead of the $5,000 to $10,000 lump sums they were owed.

It's unclear exactly how many people were affected. A Metro State spokesperson said fewer than two dozen faculty members complained about the screw-up.

Hammersmith has served as president since 2008. She told the Star Tribune that the recent turmoil played no role in her decision to retire.
