Met Council postpones decision on Southwest Corridor light-rail contract

Gov. Mark Dayton continues to voice his concerns with awarding California-based URS Corp. with a $100 million contract for engineering work. The company was a consultant on the I-35W bridge before it collapsed in 2007. The Southwest line would connect Eden Prairie to downtown Minneapolis.

Met Council splits up Southwest Corridor light-rail contract

The Metropolitan Council has decided not to award a nearly $100 million contract to URS Corp. Instead, the Star Tribune reports the agency divided engineering work for the $1.25 billion Southwest Corridor light-rail line into four separate contracts. San Francisco-based URS will still be allowed to bid on the smaller contracts, despite its involvement with the Sabo pedestrian bridge and the Interstate 35W bridge before it collapsed in August 2007.

Transit history made as Hiawatha, Central Corridor lines joined

Workers near the Metrodome this week are connecting the Hiawatha Light Rail Line, which runs from the Mall of America in Bloomington to Target Field in Minneapolis, to the 10-mile Central Corridor line from downtown St. Paul to downtown Minneapolis, which is scheduled to open in 2014. It marks the first time since the trolleys of the 1950s that the two cities have been linked by light rail, officials say.

Artists in Central Corridor fear being priced out

Artists up and down the Central Corridor fear their thriving community could be displaced as landlords raise rents or redevelop as the light-rail train line dramatically alters the area. But city officials say the train could bring a much-needed shot of energy to University Avenue and benefit artists by bringing them more customers.
