Wisconsin middle-school students make gruesome discovery

Middle school students on a field trip Friday near Madison, Wis., found a body floating in a pond, according to the Associated Press.

The cause and time of death are under investigation by the Dane County medical examiner's office.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the eighth-graders were from Sherman Middle School, and the body was found in a lagoon in Warner Park.

Police say the body has been tentatively identified as a Madison man in his 50s, WMTV reports. Police say the body appears to have been in the water for "some time."

The students went back to school immediately, where counselors from the Madison School District student services team were available to help them, according to a letter sent to parents last night.
