Mild winter weather expected to trigger spring flooding in Red River Basin

The National Weather Service says highs in the 50s and overnight lows above freezing this weekend will increase water levels in streams and tributaries. Ice jams could also cause some flash flooding. The Fargo-Moorhead area is only expected to see minor flooding this spring.

NWS: Red River expected to crest at 18.5 feet Monday

That's just half a foot above minor flood stage in Fargo. The National Weather Service predicts the river will fall back below its 18-foot flood stage on Wednesday.

Despite dry topsoil, flood threat remains in Red River Valley

Beneath that dry topsoil the ground remains saturated. It would take a dry winter and spring to really reduce next year's flood chances.

NWS: Small chance of "major" Red River flooding

This year's brown Christmas may have a silver lining for some living along the Minnesota and North Dakota border. The National Weather Service's (NWS) first flood forecast says there's only a small chance of "major" flooding along the Red River next spring. But city officials on both sides of the river say it’s still too early to tell for sure. The NWS will release its next flood forecast at the end of January.
