Mild weather prompts changes for Beargrease

Bleak snow totals and poor trail conditions are causing organizers of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in northern Minnesota to make some changes to the races, Northlands NewsCenter reports.

The marathon will begin with eight dogs instead of 14 and mushers can add the rest at Highway 2. There will also be route changes to the eight-dog mid-distance race.

Last year, the race was canceled altogether due to lack of snow. It was only the second cancellation in Beargrease history.

The Duluth News Tribune says if conditions worsen by the race day on Jan. 29, the event will be rescheduled to Mar. 10.
