Military proposal at Saints game: He made pitch, she got diamond

Laura Shipman thought the big deal for the night was the fact that she was being honored as the Saints' Hero of the Game at the Monday night baseball game at Midway Stadium in St. Paul. She's preparing for her third deployment later this year.

FOX 9 was there in the middle of the fifth inning when Shipman was on the field as her boyfriend Anthony Atchison approached and surprised her when he got down on one knee and proposed. Atchison had talked to Shipman's father about his intentions and the bride-to-be's father had already given his blessing for the two to wed. Larry Shipman said his daughter "had an idea" that a proposal was coming, but had not expected it at Midway Stadium.

Atchsion later admitted that he had the jitters as he made his pitch at center field. Shipman said yes, the two embraced and the lighted sign in the stadium flashed "Congratulations Laura and Anthony."

"I thought he was being sneaky or something," Shipman said. "He surprised me with the whole hero thing."

"I'm glad it's over," Atchison admitted. "I was really nervous for the last couple of hours, just trying to hide it from her."

As a member of the Air National Guard, Shipman has been deployed to Afghanistan and Kuwait. She will go to the Middle East later this year, with a wedding to follow in the future.

The groom-to-be is also in the military.
