Minnesota couple celebrates 65-year anniversary

ABC Newspapers has the story of Buster Johnson, now 87, who first met Laura Johnson at a dance at the Knights of Columbus in Anoka in 1948 – and they were married three months later. Now the couple is celebrating a 65-year anniversary.

Buster had proposed in a 1936 Ford coupe. “He said he loved me, I said I love you, too,” Laura said. (They later took a honeymoon trip to Canada, and the Ford's windshield wiper broke, so Laura wiped the window by hand as Buster drove.) She was 20 and he was 22.

How rare is a 65-year marriage? It's not at all unheard of – in fact, there have been bigger anniversaries celebrated this year in Minnesota. ABC newspapers also had the story last month of Andover couple Ellen and Clelland Darr, who celebrated 75 years.

Faribault couple Clark and Cleora Binger celebrated 70 years together in February, the Fairibault Daily News reported. “We’ve had sickness and we’ve had gladness,” Clark told the newspaper. “So, sure, there were some hard times. But we have a lot to be thankful for.”

Chatfield, Minn., couple Orville and Helen Tangen this spring also celebrated seven decades. "She's put up with me for 70 years. I don't know why, but she has," Orville told the Chatfield News.

A longtime Crookston couple married 65 years died on the same day earlier this year, the Grand Forks Herald reported.
