Deer hunters in Minnesota are having much less luck this season than they did during the same time period a year ago, the Pioneer Press reported.

Lou Cornicelli, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource's wildlife researcher, said as of Nov. 13 hunters killed 131,527, a 9 percent drop from this point in the season in 2011.

This year's deer hunting season got under way Nov. 2.

The lower numbers don't comes as a huge surprise to Cornicelli as fewer kills were expected going into this year's harvest.

A disappointing harvest last year is considered part of the reason for lower numbers this year.

According to the Pioneer Press, the DNR lowered the bag limits in several deer hunting zones to protecting more female deer -- since they are the basis of a growing population.

DNR: Deer harvest down seven percent in 2011

The Department of Natural Resources says the decline is a result of a smaller deer population and a windy opening weekend of the firearms season. Minnesota deer hunters harvested 192,300 deer during the 2011 season. That's 15,000 fewer deer than in 2010. The 2012 deer hunting season begins in September.
