Minn. food companies roll out the dough to defeat California labeling law

Golden Valley-based General Mills Inc. has spent more than $1.1 million to convince Californians to vote against Proposition 37 -- a new law that would require food manufacturers to label products containing genetically modified ingredients, the Star Tribune reports.

Golden Valley-based General Mills Inc. has spent more than $1.1 million to convince Californians to vote against Proposition 37 -- a new law that would require food manufacturers to label products containing genetically modified ingredients, the Star Tribune reports.

Austin-based Hormel Foods, Minnetonka-based Cargill Inc., Faribault Foods and Arden Hills-based Land O'Lakes have also helped defeat the ballot measure.

The newspaper notes Finland, Minn.-based Organic Consumers Association has chipped in about $1 million to support the proposition.

General Mills goes to federal court to defend Greek yogurt

Attorneys for General Mills Inc. pleaded their case in front of a federal judge on Friday over claims that its Yoplait Greek-style yogurt is neither Greek nor yogurt. The Golden Valley-based company asked U.S. District Judge Susan Nelson to throw out the consumer fraud lawsuit, which was filed by Minneapolis law firm Zimmerman Reed.
