A bill that includes an additional $150 million for higher education programs and a two-year tuition freeze at public colleges and universities cleared the Minnesota House Thursday in a bipartisan vote of 86-44, according to the Associated Press.

The increase pushes the state's higher education spending above $2.7 billion in an attempt to prevent Minnesotans from being priced out of college. The House bill earmarks 80 percent of the funds for tuition relief.

The bill now goes to conference committees to be combined with the Senate's version of the bill.

The additional $263 million for college programs in the Senate's version would also freeze tuition for undergrads at the University of Minnesota, but caps tuition increases at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system at 3 percent.

The Senate's plan provides an additional $80 million each to the University of Minnesota, MnSCU and the state grant program.

Both bills attempt to assert greater oversight over higher education's costs, the Star Tribune reported.
