Minneapolis Farmers Market finds another new home for 2016

The Minneapolis Farmers Market will have another new home for 2016.

The market, which was moved to Hennepin Avenue last year, will be at the Government Center South Plaza this year, the Minneapolis Downtown Council announced on Wednesday.

The south plaza, located between 6th Street and 7th Street, and 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue, provides more room and foot traffic than the Hennepin Avenue location.

“We’re excited to bring the farmers market to a new area of downtown that continues to grow and thrive,” Pat Nelson, who manages the market, said in a the news release. “Hennepin County Government Center’s South Plaza offers a fantastic green space that will allow patrons to gather, browse and shop in a convenient location.”

The farmers market kick off will take place on Thursday, May 5 and will be open every Thursday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the outdoor farmers market season, which ends Nov. 10.

Originally, the farmers market was going to reside on Hennepin Avenue for two years during the $50 million dollar revamp of Nicollet Mall. The farmers market will be relocated to Nicollet once the project is complete.

The plan for the renovated Nicollet Mall includes space for the farmers market, and is expected to wrap up by 2017.

In addition to Thursday's farmers market, Hennepin County will continue it's Go Outside summer programming at the South Plaza each Wednesday from June 1 through August 31. Activities ranging from rotating food trucks to lawn games will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“Our programming at Hennepin County Government Center South Plaza will provide an opportunity where you can grab your own lunch, play games, or bring fresh produce home for your family – all in one nearby spot," said Hennepin County Administrator David Hough.

The City of Minneapolis has a list of other farmers markets in the downtown area and beyond for those who can't wait until May for fresh produce.
