Minneapolis could be getting a Fillmore concert venue

Plans for the 2,000-capacity venue and attached hotel should be submitted soon.

"Fillmore" is one of the most famous music venue names in the country, and Minneapolis could be getting its own version.

More details have been revealed by United Properties about its planned mixed-use development on land next to Target Field Station in the North Loop, which will see the construction of a new 155-room Marriott by Westin hotel a stone's throw from the home of the Twins.

But attached to that hotel, United has confirmed it intends to team up with global events company Live Nation to build "The Fillmore," a 2,000-capacity music theater would be modeled and named for the famous rock venue in San Francisco.

If you're not familiar with the name, The Fillmore was founded in the 1960s by entrepreneur Bill Graham and sparked a musical renaissance in the Bay Area, helping launch the careers of luminaries including the Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane and Santana.

Over the years, artists including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Cream, and Otis Redding appeared on the famous stage, with Graham expanding his Fillmore brand to New York after moving to the East Coast.

As this explainer on Quora notes, Live Nation bought the original Fillmore about a decade ago and began to expand it, bringing other venues across the country under the "Fillmore" brand.

Some of these were renamed historical venues and others, like the planned venue in Minneapolis, were new-builds.

The new venue would provide competition for First Avenue, with the Star Tribune noting that Live Nation has struggled to compete with the Minneapolis institution in recent years. The company counts the State Theatre among its 41 music properties it books shows for across the U.S.

Attached to the venue would be a service restaurant called BG's, named after Bill Graham, the plans show.
