Minneapolis hotels among 20 hacked – credit card details possibly stolen

Two downtown Minneapolis hotels were named among 20 across America that may have been infiltrated by hackers over a period of months.

HEI Hotels & Resorts, which owns hotel chains including Marriott, Starwood (Westin) and Hyatt, announced on Monday it had been alerted to a data breach affecting potentially thousands of customers.

Included on a list of hotels affected by the hack are The Westin Minneapolis, on 6th St. South, and The Hotel Minneapolis Autograph Collection on 4th St. South.

Those who stayed at The Westin between Sept. 2 last year and June 17 this year, and those who stayed at the Hotel Minneapolis between March 1 this year and April 27, may have had their card details compromised.

According to HEI, the hackers used malware to obtain card information from people who bought items at point-of-sale terminals, such as at hotel restaurant and bars.

The following information may have been stolen:

  • Name
  • Payment card account number
  • Expiration date
  • Verification code

Card holders are advised to review their credit and debit card account statements to see if there are any unfamiliar charges.

"We urge customers to remain vigilant and continue to monitor statements for unusual activity going forward," HEI says. "If they see anything they do not understand or that looks suspicious, or if they suspect that any fraudulent transactions have taken place, customers should immediately notify the issuer of the credit or debit card."

The hotel company says the security issue has been addressed and it's safe for customers to use their cards at affected hotels.
