KSTP reports a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train hit a pedestrian on Nicollet Island Saturday morning.

Minneapolis police say the victim was with another person, who reported the accident and was not injured.

WCCO says first responders provided immediate medical attention to the victim, which likely saved his life. The witness who called 911 told police it appeared his friend's legs had been severed by the train.

Authorities are investigating what caused the accident, which occurred shortly after midnight on the 200 block of Island Avenue East, near DeLaSalle High School.

They said both men are in their 30s, but did not release their names. They said alcohol may have been involved.

The Federal Railroad Administration Office of Safety Analysis reports 51 train accidents in Minnesota last year, and nine deaths.
