Minneapolis says Nicole Curtis' claim about building permit cost is untrue

The standoff between the City of Minneapolis and HGTV's Rehab Addict star Nicole Curtis over a north Minneapolis property rumbles on.

The city has disputed a claim by Curtis that it demanded a $200,000 deposit in exchange for a building permit to carry out renovations at 1522 Hillside Ave. N., which Curtis bought from the city a few years back for $2.

A lawsuit filed by the city in January alleges Curtis breached a contract she signed in November 2013 by failing to carry out minimum improvements on the property within the 12-month deadline they agreed, and that she had not paid real estate taxes or maintain insurance on the property.

Curtis denies the claims, and in a Facebook post last week blamed the city for obstructing her attempts to bring the house back into use as a single-family home, claiming the city wanted the six-figure deposit in exchange for a permit to start construction.

In a statement sent to GoMN, the city denies this, saying: "Despite her assertion, the City of Minneapolis never required a $200,000 deposit from Nicole Curtis or Detroit Renovations before issuing any permit for construction at 1522 Hillside Ave.

"The fact is, Ms. Curtis has repeatedly failed to fulfill the conditions of her agreement with the city to renovate the Hillside Avenue property. This breach has negatively impacted her neighbors and this is why the city has taken action."

Here's Curtis's full Facebook post:

The Star Tribune reports the $200,000 figure has not been mentioned in any court filings made by Curtis' lawyers, although they do say the home has not been rehabbed because Curtis "was prevented and/or delayed from completing performance" due to the acts of the city and "of third parties."

The newspaper tried to get comment from Curtis' attorney, but received no response.

Although Curtis has said some remedial improvements have been carried out around the property, which has been primed and a security fence has been put up around the boundary, some neighbors are not happy that the house has been left unused these past few years.

CityPages spoke to some in 2015 who said the house was a magnet for trespassers and drug deals. Curtis' spokesperson in response said the star had been sent blackmail and other kinds of threats over her ownership of the property.
