Minnesota-born musher oldest racer ever to win Iditarod

Author:

Minnesota-born Mitch Seavey, 53, became the oldest musher ever to win Alaska's grueling Iditarod Sled Dog Race, crossing the finish line with his 10-dog team late Tuesday night with a time of nine days, seven hours and 39 minutes, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

“This is for all of the gentlemen of a certain age,” he said after finishing the 1,000-mile race. He beat 43-year-old Aliy Zirkle by just 24 minutes.

Seavey lives in Seward, Alaska, but was born in Minnesota, his race bio says.

He first won the race in 2004, the Associated Press reported.

Sixty-five mushers started the race March 2, the Washington Post reported in a slideshow of the beginning of the 41st running of the race.
