Minnesota Cup expands to competition for food entreprenuers

Minnesota has a long history of launching innovative food products and agricultural techniques that produce consumer products. Now innovators working in the field will get a new way to launch their products and ideas.

The Business Journal reported that the entrepreneurial prize the Minnesota Cup will add a new category—Food, Agriculture and Beverage—for its 10th annual competition. The Minnesota Cup has become a highly-sought-after prize for start-ups. The 2014 competition will award a combined $300,000 in prizes.

The Taste of General Mills, a blog operated by the Golden Valley company, announced that General Mills is the lead sponsor for the new food division. The company will recruit local judges, sponsors, and mentors.

The competition in the new food division will include businesses that are focused on food products, food processing technologies, material innovation, ingredients technologies, agriculture innovation, food safety advancements and more.

The website for the Minnesota Cup said that the award joins the other six Minnesota Cup divisions: Energy/Clean Tech/Water, General, High Tech, Life Science/Health IT, Social Entrepreneur and Student. Last year's winner, selected from almost 1,100 contestants, was Preceptis Medical, which created a a medical device to allow children's ear tube procedures to be performed with reduced pain and surgical time.
