Minnesota remembers: Memorial Day services scheduled across the state


While many regard Memorial Day as the start of the summer season, there are numerous ceremonies scheduled across the state to commemorate fallen heroes. Many places of worship are also holding special services today.

KMSP has a list of annual events that acknowledges the solemn nature of the day by remembering war dead. It includes memorials in St. Louis Park, Eden Prairie and at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.

KARE 11 reports that Gov. Mark Dayton and Sen. Amy Klobuchar will be among the dignitaries marking the day at the annual Fort Snelling Military Cemetery service.

Several Veterans organizations will gather on the State Capitol grounds in St. Paul. The Twin Cities Veterans for Peace hold a memorial observance at 9:30 a.m. while the Vietnam Veterans of America will gather at 11 a.m.

The Duluth News Tribune offers a list of events across the northern part of the state, while the Alexandria Echo Press has a list of events in Central Minnesota, including parades and ceremonies.

In Onamia, the annual Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post Memorial Day Pow-Wow is hosted by AMVets Post 53. The Pow-Wow features Native American dance, music, food, crafts and games to to honor past and present veterans. The event is from noon to 5 p.m.
