Northern Minnesota State Rep. David Dill dies at age 60

Minnesota State Rep. David Dill has died at age 60, Gov. Mark Dayton

" target="_blank">said in a statement late Saturday night.

The Crane Lake Democrat had been undergoing cancer treatment at the Mayo Clinic since mid-July.

Dill, who was first elected in 2002, represented Koochiching, northern St. Louis and Cook counties. Before that, he served as the city administrator for Orr for more than a decade, his bio notes.

He was the chairman of the Lands Subcommittee and served on the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, the Duluth News Tribune says. He focused his legislative efforts on natural resource issues, including mining, logging, hunting and fishing, the paper notes.

"David was a giant in Minnesota politics who left his mark through an unwavering commitment to our great outdoors," Sen. Amy Klobuchar said in a statement Sunday, calling him a "tireless advocate" for the people of Minnesota.

Funeral services have not been announced, and there will likely be a special election held this fall to fill Dill's seat, Minnesota Brown says.

Those who knew Dill shared their memories and condolences of the legislator, who was known for being caring, funny and someone who passionately represented his constituents.

In a statement Sunday morning, House DFL Leader Paul Thissen said:

“We will really miss David Dill. There are few legislators who focused so intently on representing his constituents or who did so more effectively. He wore his success lightly and when he spoke, people listened because they knew he said what he really believed, he didn't play partisan games, and most often had common sense on his side. Most important, he cared deeply for his family and spoke often about them with pride and love.”

Those who knew Dill shared their condolences on Twitter:
