Minnesota's oldest comic book store will make way for new apartments

But the owner plans to open a new and bigger shop not too far away.

Comic Book College has been at the corner of 32nd and Hennepin in Uptown since 1974. It's the oldest comic book store in the state, but it needs to move this summer.

The move isn't by choice, either. Tim Lohn has owned the shop since 2003, and he tells KARE 11 he's being forced out because a developer will be replacing his shop with condos.

Lohn tells City Pages he was upset at first and thought about protesting the development.

"But then the new developer came and met me, and he seemed like a nice guy who’s just trying to do what he can for his family, I suppose," he says.

So Lohn has decided just to go with the flow and make the best of the situation.

"Though we are disappointed about the move, we are excited about the opportunity to be able to grow and expand at our new location," a Facebook post says.

Lohn is hoping to move his shop to a larger spot 10 minutes southeast at 4632 Nicollet Ave.

Plans aren't final yet, but Lohn hopes to open Aug. 1. He'll probably move out of the current location right before that.

In the meantime, you can stop by and celebrate the old shop. Saturday is Free Comic Book Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

About the new apartments

Some upscale condos will be taking over the space where Comic Book College and Uptown Family and Cosmetic Dentistry are currently located.

The Star Tribune says Minneapolis-based Lander Development plans to build a new three-story building.

There will be 26 apartments on the upper floors, the paper says.

Construction is expected to start in the fall and a take about a year.
