Minnesota's one of the safest states in the U.S., study says

We aren't No. 1, but we're close.

If you live in Minnesota, congratulations! You're living in one of the safest states in the U.S.

That's according to a study by WalletHub. A team of analysts there looked at things like assaults per capita, unemployment, and natural disasters. And Minnesota came out as the fourth safest state in the bunch.

As mentioned above, the study looked at a lot of different things to determine the safety of a state. It evaluated crime, how many law enforcement workers there are, debt and health insurance, road deaths and DWIs, workplace injuries, climate disasters and more. You can check out the full methodology here.

Minnesota fared very well in several of those categories, earning its fourth place ranking.

Like we were third best for fewest fatalities per 100 million miles driven. And fourth for lowest share of population without health insurance. We came in at third for the highest percentage of adults with a rainy-day fund.

Who beat us?

So WalletHub assigned points to each state depending on how they did in each category. Minnesota ended up with a total of 61.78 points.

Vermont came out on top with 65.09. That's followed by Maine with 62.46 and Massachusetts with 62.03.

Iowa ranked 18th safest. Wisconsin was 20th. North Dakota was 39th and South Dakota was 43rd.

On the other side of things, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Oklahoma came out as the least safe.

Earlier this year, WalletHub ranked Minnesota one of the best states for millennials for a lot of the same reasons. But last fall, 24/7 Wall Street named Minneapolis the 25th most dangerous major city in the country.
