Minnesota's top 100 baby names now includes Mohamed


Baby names in Minnesota may be starting to reflect Minnesota’s growing diversity, the Star Tribune reports.

Mohamed has made its first appearance on the list of the state’s most popular baby boy names (No. 98). The list compiled by the Social Security Administration was updated Tuesday (although the data is still a bit dated – from 2011), the Star Tribune says.

The name Mohamed, in its several variations, is one of the most popular worldwide for Muslim parents and it has been rising on the list of most popular in Minnesota as the state's Somali population grows, the newspaper notes.

Here are the list's top 10 names for Minnesota boys:

Looking for names that are trending more recently? The website Nameberry examines data compiled between January and March 2013 to predict which names are climbing most rapidly in popularity this year. Influences for the 2013 list include television characters and romantic literary heroes, celebrity babies and classic jazz musicians, a Houston Chronicle blog notes, the likes of Mavis, Marlowe and Severine.
