Tips from social media companies led to child pornography charges being filed against a Minneapolis business owner.

Gregory Dolphin, who owns Dolphin Staffing, was arrested Thursday after authorities got search warrants to go over his home, office, and digital devices, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office announced. Police started investigating the 62-year-old after receiving several "cybertips" – tips from social media sites that are required to give info to law enforcement if they suspect someone might be using their service for child porn.

Authorities took his cellphone, two flash drives and computer, and so far have found a video on the flash of an underage girl being sexually assaulted, as well as file names that reference pedophilia and child pornography, according to the charges. Investigators are still searching through the media devices.

Dolphin told interviewers he was aware child porn was on the devices, the charges say.

He's charged with one count of possessing child porn, and faces up to five years in prison and/or a fine if he's convicted. He's expected in court Monday.

The scope of child pornography

The Department of Justice says child pornography was almost wiped out in the 1980s thanks to some successful prevention campaigns. But the explosion of the internet – which has provided fast, easy, anonymous methods to transfer files – has once again made it a widespread issue.

In 2016, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says it received 8.2 million reports to its cyber tipline, with most regarding images of possible child sexual abuse, reports of "sextortion," child sex trafficking and child sexual molestation. The group also has a team dedicated to identifying children in photos and videos that show sexual abuse, and to date has reviewed 192 million pieces of media – resulting in 12,500 children identified by law enforcement.

One study by the group Thorn found three out of every 10 searches on the eDonkey p2p network relate to child pornography.
