The 32-year-old’s knee appeared to give out from under her as she approached the net during the opening game of her third set against Sorana Cirstea. Seconds later her screams were the only sound as the stunned crowd watched in silence.
According to the New York Times, Mattek-Sands’ injury was vaguely defined by Wimbledon officials as “an acute knee injury.”
Mattek-Sands is ranked 103rd in singles and No. 1 in doubles. She and her doubles partner, Lucie Safarova, won three straight Grand Slam titles entering Wimbledon.
She grew up in Rochester where she was home-schooled before turning pro at 14 years old.
