A state representative in northeast Minnesota is undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic for a "serious medical condition."

The Duluth News Tribune has been told by state lawmakers and officials that Rep. David Dill, DFL-Crane Lake, has been receiving treatment at the Rochester clinic since mid-July.

The 60-year-old Democrat represents much of northeastern Minnesota, the paper notes, including Koochiching, northern St. Louis, Lake and Cook counties. He lives in Crane Lake and has another home near International Falls.

His family have not confirmed to the newspaper the nature of his ailment, but The Tower Timberjay News claims that he has been having chemotherapy for cancer.

The Timberjay says it is the latest in a series of illnesses to have befallen the politician, having being diagnosed with diabetes in his 20s, receiving a kidney transplant in 2010, and later undergoing surgery to install a pacemaker to treat an irregular heartbeat.

Dill was elected to Minnesota's House in 2002, representing District 3A, with the Timberjay noting he has played an influential role on mining and outdoor issues – two pertinent subjects in the area he represents – as well as being "a strong advocate for education."

Well-wishes have been expressed by northern Minnesota blogger Aaron Brown in his Minnesota Brown blog, who says: "Dill has established a record as a fighter and will certainly do all he can in recovery."

"In my experience, I’d describe Dill as one of the smartest members of the Range delegation," he adds.

The Duluth News Tribune notes Dill is chairman of the House Lands Subcommittee and has served on the Environment and Natural Resources Committee.
