MN teen shot in neck while dad was handling gun, police say

A 14-year-old Aitkin County boy who was accidentally shot by his father over the weekend remains in critical condition at a Twin Cities hospital.

Dennis Vanportfliet, 37, was handling his .40 caliber Sig Sauer pistol Sunday night when it discharged, leaving Dawson Vanportfliet with a gunshot wound to the neck and jaw area, the Brainerd Dispatch reports.

First responders performed CPR, and he was later airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition Tuesday, Aitkin Age notes.

The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office believes the incident was an accident, Northland's NewsCenter says.

At least 100 community members gathered near Aitkin High School Monday night for a candlelight vigil to support Dawson and his family, Aitkin Age says.

A GoFundMe Page has been setup to help the family with medical bills related to the accident. As of Tuesday afternoon, $670 had been raised toward the $30,000 goal.
