MN winning streak: Rochester man claims $1M Powerball prize

Minnesota had back-to-back $1M Powerball prize winners from the drawings on April 9 and 13.

A St. Paul bus driver picked up the first win last Monday.

Then on Thursday, the lottery announced that another winning ticket had been sold at Carroll's Corn in Rochester, but not yet claimed.

Holders of the winning tickets have one year to claim the prize – but Nick Suchla of Rochester didn't take much time. He arrived at lottery headquarters on April 15 with his $1 million ticket in hand, the MN Lottery website said.

As the IT director for the U of M in Rochester, Suchla makes the short walk from his office to Carroll’s Corn two to three times a week, the site said.

According to the big winner's story:

Nick purchased a Powerball ticket on April 13 for that night's drawing.

His wife, Lacey, saw a Facebook post the next day about the winning ticket purchased at Carroll's Corn.

When Nick got home, Lacey found out that he had indeed bought a ticket – and she joked that he should check to see if they were winners.

“I didn’t get the Powerball, but as I checked the other numbers I thought, ‘That’s strange—they’re all the same as on my ticket,’” Nick said.

He discovered that the numbers on his ticket matched the numbers drawn on April 13, and said,“That’s the $1 million ticket!”

The winning Powerball numbers for April 13 were 30-33-35-38-64 and the Powerball was 22.

The Lottery says, in total, the games have brought in more than $2.6 billion for the state. About $1 billion has gone to environmental causes statewide, while about $1.5 billion has helped fund state programs including education, public safety and health & human services.
