The new chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system will be formally installed this week in a ceremony at the state Capitol. Chancellor Steven Rosenstone is scheduled to accept the ceremonial medallion during an event Wednesday morning.

High school students thinking about going to college may have the opportunity to apply for free Nov. 12-16 during Minnesota College Application Week. Last year, Governor Dayton proclaimed that the second week in November is to be dedicated to informing students about the college application process, especially first generation college students, students of color and low-income students.

Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system will consider a newly-proposed budget Tuesday. It would raise tuition at the two dozen state colleges by 3.7 percent and at the seven universities by 4.4 percent. Officials say shuffling will also allow the hiring of more teachers.

MnSCU Chancellor Steven Rosenstone announced last month a new effort to better match MnSCU programs to needed skills. Since then, system officials have held more than 30 listening sessions in different fields. Many Minnesota companies report being unable to find skilled labor in their trades, the Information Technology field is especially hard up for talent.

Growing difficulties in gaining government consent has led the two companies to withdraw their application with the Federal Communications Comission for a proposed $39 billion merger.
