More layoffs from Target, this time in India as 180 workers lose their jobs

Target has announced more layoffs as part of its ongoing restructuring program – but this time Twin Cities jobs are safe.

The Pioneer Press reports Target Corp. has on Thursday laid off 180 workers at its data operations office in Bangalore, India, as well as closing 125 open positions.

"Earlier this year, Target announced that we would be undergoing a comprehensive corporate restructuring which would include headcount reductions, primarily at our headquarters locations," Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder told the newspaper.

"Since that time, we have implemented several changes at our U.S.-based headquarters locations focused on driving greater agility and efficiency to best position Target for future success," she added. "Following those changes, yesterday we informed our Target India team that we were eliminating approximately 180 positions as well as closing 125 open positions."

The Star Tribune reports the latest layoffs bring the total number of jobs cut in India this year to 350, with 170 workers having lost their jobs in February after Target announced its withdrawal from Canada.

The Business Journal puts the total number of layoffs Target has made in 2015 at 20,170, with 17,600 of these coming from Canada as Target shut down its entire operation north of the border.

Some 2,220 have been in the U.S., most of which were made at its headquarters in Minneapolis in March, when 1,700 people were told they had lost their jobs on a single day, with 1,400 open positions also eliminated.

The retail giant's recovery is showing signs of bearing fruit after a turbulent few years, with a 52 percent rise in profits announced in its first quarter results last month.
