A 3-year-old boy is dead after his mother accidentally hit him in a parking lot.
In a news release, St. Paul police say it happened around 5:45 p.m. Saturday. Authorities responded to a call that a child had been hit by a car in a parking lot on the east side of Harding Senior High School.
When they arrived, police found a four-door sedan with front end damage and Wah Has Paw, a 39-year-old woman who was "visibly shaken and emotional."
Police say the woman had been practicing driving the vehicle in the parking lot with family members when she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake. She lost control of the vehicle and hit her 3-year-old son, Cha Kpaw-mooku. The boy got pinned against a large clothing collection box.
Someone passing by heard the crash and stopped to help. They took the boy and a family member to Regions Hospital, but live-saving efforts were unsuccessful.
The mother and witnesses are fully cooperating with authorities, the release says. Investigators haven't found any sign of alcohol or impairment playing a role in the crash.
