Mother's Day deals and freebies in Minnesota


It's Mother's Day Sunday, and if you're still searching for a good gift or activity (but one that fits within your budget), there are a number of deals out there for you to take advantage of.


The website Pocket Your Dollars put together a lengthy list of discounts and freebies, most of them in the state of Minnesota. A few of the places offering free or reduced admission:

– American Swedish Institute: Free for mothers and grandmothers, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
– Minnesota Zoo: Free admission for moms on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets to the zoo's IMAX are buy one, get one free as well for moms.
– Oliver Kelley Farm: Mothers accompanied by a child get free admission to the historic farm.

The site also provides some food and drink deals. For example:
– Spaghetti Warehouse: Moms will get a coupon for a free lasagna entree for their next visit.
– Boston Market: Buy a meal on Sunday, get one free for mom.
– Starbucks: On Sunday, the Oprah Chai drink is buy one, get one free.


The DNR is offering wildflower walks at a handful of parks over Mother's Day weekend. The Brainerd Dispatch says Wild River State Park, the Bulebell Festival at Carley State Park, and the Great River Bluffs State Park are all participating.

The Star Tribune has a few more wildflower events, such as guided walks at the Eloise Butler Wildflower Sanctuary, the Interstate State Park, and the University of Minnesota Arboretum.

CityPages has a list of weekend events (some Mother's Day specific, others not). There's the "Fight Like a Mother!" creative event Saturday 2-8 p.m. at Color Wheel Gallery (319 W. 46th St., Minneapolis) featuring art, poetry, and other activities. Or the Craftstravaganza at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, a one-day art market for handmade crafts and goods. That's 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, and admission is free. CityPages also says Forever Yogurt in St. Louis Park is giving mothers who show up with their children $5 in free frozen yogurt.

If you want to go the heartwarming photo route, check out Walgreen's. KARE 11 says you can get a free 8x10 photo enlargement for free on the Walgreen's website, through Sunday. Just use the code ENLARGEIT at checkout, then do an in-store pick-up. Or, if your mother lives far away, KARE suggests scheduling a pick-up at her local Walgreen's.

Ideas For Kids

And if you need to get the young kids involved on short notice, don't panic: Buzzfeed has you covered, with 17 easy emergency Mother's Day crafts for children.

Among the suggestions: Turn a cut-out of your child's hand into a sign language "I love you" card; imprint handmade drawings on a wax candle; or use footprints, handprints and paint to make a personalized tote bag.
