Motorcycles, ice cream: Minnesota companies roar into Asia

A pair of made-in-Minnesota, all-American classics are being exported to Asia.

Ice cream Blizzards are going to where the weather does not produce them. The Business Journal reports that International Dairy Queen, based in Edina, is hoping to scoop up customers with its new ventures in Vietnam and Taiwan. The company opened a store in Taipei in December and plans six additional outlets in Taiwan this year. Last week, a pair of DQ's opened in Ho Chi Minh City. Dairy Queen has 600 stores in China.

Minnesota travelers who visit the Asian countries might be surprised by the adapted local flavors used there, including red bean and almond ice cream.

The business section of India Today had a story with a New Delhi dateline about the launch of the Indian in India.

The story said that Polaris India, a subsidiary of Minnesota-based Polaris Industries Inc, on Wednesday started selling its iconic motorcycle brand to compete with Harley Davidson and the British Triumph brand. Polaris India is selling three models of the bike that will be imported as completely built units.

"This launch holds great importance for us. Polaris India has ended the long wait for Indian motorcycle enthusiasts with this launch," said company's Managing Director Pankaj Dubey. "We are opening first dealership in Delhi. Later, we also plan to open one in Bangalore."

Last August, Polaris introduced the three new models of Indian Motorcycles in front of thousands of bikers at the annual rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. Polaris CEO Scott Wine said the company spent nearly $100 million to develop the Indian Chief Classic, the Indian Chief Vintage, and the Indian Chieftan. The new models are the descendants of the brand, whose first motorcycles hit the road in 1901. Previous efforts have struggled with how to adapt Indian’s distinctive retro style in a modern bike.
