Movement begins for new Hastings bridge

The process of moving the bridge span for the new Hastings bridge over the Mississippi River has begun. The 545-foot span will be lifted into place next Wednesday. Residents gathered along the Mississippi Friday to watch the historic event.

Residents gathered along the Mississippi River to watch the main span of the new Hastings bridge move for its journey down the river, KARE 11 reports. The 545-foot span is scheduled to be lifted into place next Wednesday. The four lane bridge should be open to two lanes of traffic by early next summer.

The Hastings Star Gazette has been documenting this historic event. A little movement can be seen from Friday's action in a time lapse video.

A state transportation official compared it to parallel parking a 6.5 million pound piece of equipment. Barges floated the main span of a new Hastings bridge down the Mississippi River and maneuvered it into place over the weekend. The span had been assembled upstream. It now sits alongside the existing bridge. There's more work to be done before it opens to traffic next spring.

The Spiral Bridge first opened to horse-and-buggy traffic in Hastings in 1895. It is the only one of its kind ever built. Crews demolished the bridge in 1951 by simply knocking it into the Mississippi River.

MnDOT: Construction on new St. Croix River bridge to begin next spring

MnDOT officials tell MPR that foundation work on the new bridge crossing the St. Croix River downstream from Stillwater will begin next spring, rather than in 2014. The proposed four-lane bridge connecting Minnesota and Wisconsin will replace the 80-year-old Stillwater Lift Bridge. The entire project is estimated to cost up to $676 million and take about three years to complete.

Stillwater Lift Bridge to close for 4 months

The Stillwater Lift Bridge will close Monday for four months while MnDot crews make repairs. The bridge will not reopen until late December. The lift span will open to boat traffic on Sundays from Oct. 15 through Nov. 5 and will also not open again until late December.

Concerns with Minneapolis pedestrian bridge from the beginning

An engineer told the Star Tribune he noticed "high stresses" on a plate anchoring a set of cables during construction of the Sabo Bridge in 2006. The bridge was closed last month after an anchor plate cracked and caused cables to fall 100 feet.

MnDOT proposes new bridge over Mississippi in Winona
