MPD officers wounded in shootout named, as is surviving motorcycle passenger

Two Minneapolis police officers wounded in Friday afternoon's south Minneapolis shootout and the motorcycle passenger in a related fatal accident are all in satisfactory condition, and have now been named or identified.

The officers, Michael Meath and Ricardo Muro, have been with the department since August 2005 and October 2001, respectively, the Pioneer Press reports Saturday night. The two remain at the Hennepin County Medical Center.

The Star Tribune reports both men are members of the SWAT team and have received numerous commendations.

KSTP-TV is naming Jocelin Torrejon as the passenger on the back of her boyfriend's motorcycle. Ivan Romero Oliveras, 24, was killed when he collided at 26th Street and Blaisdell Avenue with an MPD SUV headed toward a shootout between police and a suspect nearby at 2717 Bryant Ave. S.

The Star Tribune is reporting that Torrejon is also in satisfactory condition and that Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau had visited Torrejon and the officers.

The paper also reports that many questions are surfacing regarding the incident that began when police shut down traffic in the area just east of Uptown while looking for a suspect who had fled in a car and then on foot after being confronted by officers who had received a report he may have committed an earlier burglary.

After a struggle in the basement of the house on Bryant Avenue, police shot the man, identified by friends and family as Terrence Terrell Franklin, 22. Some are wondering about the police pursuit that killed Romero Oliveras, which the Strib says happened 35 minutes after the shooting.

In news release issued Saturday night, the paper reports, Minneapolis police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington said that the SUV had been traveling “well below the posted speed limit” and that video evidence showed “the motorcycle struck the rear passenger side of the squad car” which had its red lights and siren activated.
