Best Buy laying off 2,400 companywide

Best Buy said it is laying off 2,400 employees this week, including roughly 600 members of its Geek Squad customer service unit and another 1,800 store employees. The announcement came Friday as the Richfield-based electronics chain said that the layoffs were part of a companywide restructuring plan announced in March.

The online school is letting go of about 4 percent of its non-faculty workforce. The company says in a news release that a move away from third-party marketing has left it with excess capacity. The Business Journal reports the company has seen enrollment decline recently.

Minnesota man cited for shooting a cougar

Daniel Hamman is now charged with shooting a protected animal. The 26-year-old allegedly shot a cougar last November. The Worthington Daily Globe reports the DNR was contacted after some photos of the 125-pound male cat were posted on Facebook.

Duluth schools lay off 29 more teachers

The Duluth School Board voted to cut 29 additional full and part-time teachers to help close a $3.8 million budget gap. Another six teachers were laid off last month. In addition to the cuts, the News Tribune reports 31 teachers retired this year. Some of those positions will be filled.
