MSU-Moorhead to admit students who got acceptance letters in error

More than 200 prospective college students eagerly awaiting acceptance letters from Minnesota State University-Moorhead got them – and then had the acceptances rescinded due to a university error.

Upon review, the 232 students did not meet the school’s own requirements for automatic admission, Forum Communications reports. The mistake surfaced last week and letters were sent out informing students of the error, a university spokesman said.

But then Wednesday, university officials reversed course again and agreed to accept the students after all, Forum reported in an update.

“We made a mistake,” university spokesman David Wahlberg said, Forum reported. “We need to own up to that mistake. We need to take responsibility for it and find a way to try and make this situation better for those individual students.”

Students can get an automatic admission with an ACT score of 21 or above, or by ranking in the top half of their high school class and getting at least a 17 on the ACT, Forum reports.

Wahlberg said the 8,500-student school is taking steps to make sure the error does not happen again.
