The grand opening of the Green Line Light Rail that links Minneapolis and St. Paul is just over a week away.

Saturday June 14th will be a day filled with music and activity at both the Union Depot in Lowertown St. Paul and the Target Field Station in Minneapolis.

According to The Current, Doomtree will headline the Union Depot performances. Southwire, Southside Desire, The 4onthefloor and Koo Koo Kango Roo will also perform at Union Depot.

A performance from New Primitives will highlight the music performances at the Target Field Station.

From grandstand shows and a midway at Hamline Ave. to a "Taste of the West Bank" and music at just about every stop, many stations will have unique celebrations.

Officials will also mark the opening of the line at 8:45 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the station at Sibley and Fourth Street. There will be another ribbon-cutting ceremony on the north lawn at the Union Depot station at 9 a.m.

City Pages reports that Gov. Mark Dayton, U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, Reps. Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum and Mayors Chris Coleman and Betsy Hodges will all speak during the celebration.

Once open, the hopes are high for the $1 billion green line.

Organizers hope the Green Line can help lead to the revitalization of University Avenue and connect Minneapolis and St. Paul.

According to MPR News, the Met Council expects more than 120 projects and $2 billion in investment within a half mile of the Green Line.

The line runs from Union Depot to the Target Field Station, with several stops along the way. According to the Star Tribune, the journey from one end of the line to the other will take a little less than an hour.

The line runs along some historic sites between the two downtowns. A landscape that could see some dramatic changes if the Met Council's expectations come true.

It will run right through the heart of the University of Minnesota and have three stops on campus.

This time lapse will take you on a virtual trip aboard the Green Line.
